Presenters will share the journey of utilizing Funds of Knowledge to develop a 1st grade writing project that involves a student, family, and school partnership. This project consists of building relationships with a family, inviting a parent into the classroom as teacher, using culturally relevant mentor texts, activities to connect students with their background experiences, and finally publishing bilingual "How To" books. The presenters will provide a lesson plan, student work progression, pictures and videos, sample mentor texts, scaffolding techniques for writing, and evidence on student growth and home-school connections.
